A reconstruction of the trial of Joan of Arc, based entirely on the transcripts of the real-life trial, concerning Joan's imprisonment, interrogation and final execution at the hands of the English, filmed in a spare, low-key fashion.

C’est de textes authentiques et de la minute même du Procès de condamnation que je me suis servi. Pour les derniers instants, j’ai eu recours aux dépositions et témoignages du Procès de réhabilitation survenu 25 ans plus tard.
Au moment où le film commence, Jeanne est emprisonnée depuis plusieurs mois dans une chambre du château de Rouen. Capturée devant Compiègne par des soldats français du parti adverse, elle a été vendue aux anglais à prix d’or (on sait quels sont les intérêts en jeu). Elle comparait devant un tribunal composé presque exclusivement de membres de l’Université anglophile de Paris et présidé par l’évêque Cauchon. » Robert Bresson.

Bresson's film is quite extraordinary. An entirely static camera, a repertoire of what seems like only a handful of angles, and no music save the unnerving thumping of medieval drums at the beginning and end, all add up to a form restrained to the point of stasis. The movement of the film comes entirely from the words and from the faces. And from the rigorous choice of those few camera angles. It is a moot point as to whether or not it is relevant that the script is composed almost entirely of transcripts from the actual trial. However, the viewer armed with this knowledge must surely be privy to an extraordinary sense of time-travel - a restrained, respectful and highly spiritual journey back into the "dark ages". There is necessarily an inescapable sense of people hundreds of years dead speaking through the mouths of the (non-professional) actors, whose limited but affecting range fits perfectly with the curious juxtaposition of past and present, of cinema and grace.

As has been pointed out many times before, one of the primary differences between Bresson's film and Dreyer's La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc is in their formal delineation between good and evil; where Dreyer uses light and shadow to point up the difference, in the Bresson film the contrast is more subtle, resting, it would seem, mainly on the fact that the Bishop Cauchon is shut exclusively head on, whilst Jeanne commands a variety of oblique camera angles. But the subtlety of the camera also brings out a fantastic sense of time, space, and place. The numerous close-ups of period shoes are all we need to have the era set firmly in our minds; the medium-shots - and complete absence of anything like a long shot - simultaneously reinforce the claustrophobia of Jeanne's predicament, and focus our attention on her, and that which falls under her gaze. The one notable exception to this is the short series of shots while she burns on the pyre, of the white doves fluttering above the canvas awning, suitable parallels with the absent characters of the Saints Catharine and Margaret, whose presence is felt and whose names recur throughout the trial. A simple film, formally, perhaps, but only in the sense that everything is pared down to a minimum, and the choices are only made with the greatest of care and most rigorous of logic. The words and the faces do not need embellishment. They need attention and simplicity, in the same way that the words uttered by the real Joan of Arc are simple and unadorned. A masterful marriage of form and content.

Es bastante probable que Procès de Jeanne d'Arc (El proceso de Juana de Arco, 1962) sea una de las películas más desnudas de cuantos formaron parte de la ya de por sí austera filmografía del gran realizador francés Robert Bresson. Sexta de las películas por él dirigidas –tres años después de la espléndida Pickpocket (1959)-, en esta ocasión el eje de su propuesta cinematográfica se reduce a un objetivo prioritario: la versión que el francés ofrece a partir de la lectura de las actas de los interrogatorios que sufrió Juana de Orleáns en el siglo XV y las recapitulaciones efectuadas un cuarto de siglo después de su condena de la hoguera, para favorecer la revocación de dicha sentencia. Es por ello que la base dramática sobre la que se desarrolla la película es inusualmente escasa, en la medida que en sus títulos precedentes albergaban una mayor libertad de acción. No importa. Con una duración escueta que apenas supera la hora de duración, Bresson despliega su rigurosa dramaturgia a partir de apenas un par de marcos escénicos esenciales –la celda en la que se encuentra presa la acusada y el recinto donde esta es juzgada y se desarrollan los interrogatorios-, que solo tendrán otro nuevo escenario en los minutos finales, donde se lleva a cabo la doble condena final de Juana –inicialmente esta se retracta y pide perdón- con la culminación de su muerte en la hoguera.

Esa ascesis que demuestra el fascinante tratamiento visual de Procés…, tiene en esta ocasión un elemento de gran significación, puesto que esa querencia en el tratamiento dramático basado en fuera de campo, se expresa incluso en la génesis de la película. Contra lo que habían ofrecido ilustres precedentes como el film de Dreyer LA Passion de Jeanne D’Arc (La pasión de Juana de Arco, 1928) o la muy cercana Saint Joan (1957. Otto Preminger), Bresson renuncia a ofrecer una visión general de la importancia y la evolución que marcó la andadura vital de la protagonista. En una decisión sin duda arriesgada –sobre todo de cara a una viabilidad de su resultado fuera de las fronteras francesas-, opta por ceñirse a esa estricta base dramática, y dando por sentado que el espectador está al corriente de lo acaecido hasta que la película centra sus imágenes. Es por ello que de forma deliberada el director sitúa al espectador en un estado de situación al que obliga a asistir a un auténtico desnudo espiritual de Juana de Arco –interpretado por una nueva “modelo” de Bresson, (Florence Delay)-, en su lucha dialéctica en la oposición a los métodos esgrimidos por los representantes de la iglesia católica, para lograr encarnar en ella un símbolo del mal que atienda sus intereses en relación con los representantes ingleses que en todo momento quieren derribar su símbolo entre determinados sectores del pueblo francés.

Non ho mai "messo al mondo" un film così disarmato, fragile e delicato come Uccellacci e uccellini. Non solo non assomiglia ai miei film precedenti, ma non assomiglia a nessun altro film. Non parlo della sua originalità, sarebbe stupidamente presuntuoso, ma della sua formula, che è quella della favola col suo senso nascosto. Il surrealismo del mio film ha poco a che fare col surrealismo storico; è fondamentalmente il surrealismo delle favole [...]
Questo film che voleva essere concepito e eseguito con leggerezza, sotto il segno dell'Aria del Perdono del "Flauto Magico", è dovuto in realtà a uno stato d'animo profondamente malinconico, per cui non potevo credere al comico della realtà (a una comicità sostantivale, oggettiva).
L'atroce amarezza dell'ideologia sottostante al film (la fine di un periodo della nostra storia, lo scadimento di un mandato) ha finito forse col prevalere. Mai ho scelto per tema di un film un soggetto così difficile: la crisi del marxismo della Resistenza e degli anni Cinquanta, poeticamente situata prima della morte di Togliatti, subita e vissuta, dall'interno, da un marxista, che non è tuttavia disposto a credere che il marxismo sia finito (il buon corvo dice: "Io non piango sulla fine delle mie idee, perché verrà di sicuro qualcun altro a prendere in mano la mia bandiera e portarla avanti! È su me stesso che piango...").
Ho scritto la sceneggiatura tenendo presente un corvo marxista, ma non del tutto ancora liberato dal corvo anarchico, indipendente, dolce e veritiero. A questo punto, il corvo è diventato autobiografico, una specie di metafora irregolare dell'autore.
Totò e Ninetto rappresentano invece gli italiani innocenti che sono intorno a noi, che non sono coinvolti nella storia, che stanno acquisendo il primo jota di coscienza: questo quando incontrano il marxismo nelle sembianze del corvo.
La presenza di Totò e Ninetto in questo film è il frutto di una scelta precisa motivata da un'altrettanto precisa posizione nell'ambito del rapporto tra personaggio e attore.
Ho sempre sostenuto che amo fare film con attori non professionisti, cioè con facce, personaggi, caratteri che sono nella realtà, che prendo e adopero nei miei film. Non scelgo mai un attore per la sua bravura di attore, cioè non lo scelgo mai perché finga di essere qualcos'altro da quello che egli è, ma lo scelgo proprio per quello che è: e quindi ho scelto Totò per quello che è. Volevo un personaggio estremamente umano, cioè che avesse quel fondo napoletano e bonario, e così immediatamente comprensibile, che ha Totò. E nello stesso tempo volevo che questo essere umano così medio, così "brava persona", avesse anche qualcosa di assurdo, di surreale, cioè di clownesco, e mi sembra che Totò sintetizzi felicemente questi elementi.

Qui m'aime me suive (2006)

This film is a tale of a doctor who decides to give up his life as the head doctor, and pursues his dreams to be a rock star. I particularly like the camera work and the lighting, it looks more artistic than a commercial movie. There are quite a few witty dialogs that I laughed out loud. The plot is slightly predictable, but the film is still very enjoyable. I also like the fact that everything in the film looks so colourful and bright. It certainly functions well as a light popcorn film, but I think it also serves as a thought provoking film. How far would someone go to pursue a dream? What should he give up to bet on a dream that may not even work out? Should one be realistic and stay where he is, or chase the wild dream that may never come true? This film looks into that, in an entertaining way.

Jun-oh, formerly a bank employee, gets a call on his first day at work from a woman seeking advice. Love Letters Of A Portuguese Nun (18+)

The first I’ve seen of the films Jess Franco made for producer Erwin C. Dietrich and, frankly, one of only three or four I’m really interested in (the others being DORIANA GREY [1976], JACK THE RIPPER [1976] and SEXY SISTERS [1977]). Having viewed this immediately after THE DEMONS (1972), I’m thankful it has proven to be a whole lot better, thus living up to its unanimously positive reputation online ever since it was released on DVD; definitely one of Franco’s best (currently ranking at No. 7 out of only 18 I’ve watched so far).

A Dog's Breakfast (2007)

I had the pleasure to see the special screening in LA back in November, and I was pleasantly surprised. I thought this would be a so-so vanity project for an actor (David Hewlett), but this is one of the best comedies on film. I want to see it again because I missed bits as the laughter was so loud - and virtually continuous. It is absolutely brilliant. A Dog's Breakfast *deserves* a wide release. It's a sleeper that will make a ton of money by word of mouth. Unfortunately, I think Hollywood is allergic to intelligent films. Think "Napoleon Dynamite" but better, oh Hollywood machine!

Solaris (2002)

This is a French made film for TV... Do they have "the movie of the week?" It is the story of a young man falling in love and having to deal with the various issues of his family finding out that he loves another man. Nicely made with a good story and I think the acting was okay, as good or better than most American TV movies. I would watch this film again and enjoy it. The two male leads interact well with either other. There are 9 avi segments that need to be joined with AJoiner or HJ Splitter. The film is in French with hard coded English subtitles. En la final, Brasil derrotó a Italia por 4:1 lo que permitió que el seleccionado sudamericano se coronara por tercera vez como campeón del mundo, adjudicándose definitivamente la Copa Jules Rimet.

В этом шоу на цирковой арене выступили сами Rolling Stones и известнейшие рок-музыканты: Jethro Tull, The Who, Taj Mahal, Марианна Фэйтфул, Йоко Оно (с The Dirty Mac) и супергруппа «The Dirty Mac», в которую вошли Джон Леннон, Эрик Клэптон, Mitch Mitchell (ударник группы Джими Хендрикса) и Кит Ричардс (гитарист The Rolling Stones). К тому времени и Rolling Stones, игравшие в самом конце шоу, и публика очень устали, что хорошо видно в фильме.

E tu vivrai nel terrore - L'aldilà (1981)

The story is a disturbing mix of elements. In the first minutes during the execution of Schweick , it is clear what kind of tale is L'aldilá. Vengeance beyond the grave, an apocalypse that is unavoidable. Common people trapped in the middle. One of the merits of Sarchetti's script is the character of Katriona Maccoll a real down to earth human being, his partner is a curious but good man. Both of them tried to do things right, but in the end that won't help . The brutality of violence is another great detail, is unexpected, extreme and very, very graphic. And as the final touch, the climatic ending. The assonant music has its logic, this is disturbing terror, it wouldn't be the same with new-age, reggae, or a ballad.

Lucio Fulci was an unique director. With L'aldilá he tried to create an 'artaudian' study of horror. He achieved that. He used less than 90 minutes to mix ominous menaces that are beyond this world waiting their time for return and extremely gory horror. The unavoidable tragedy strikes in the form of hungry zombies. He was a demanding director, he never let that their actors underestimate their roles. His use of zoom-effects are a trademark, the zoom in used in a completely original way. Let's say the zoom is the hand of someone that keep your eyes open in an awful or transcendental sequence, Fulci forces you to pay attention when he wants your attention. Delightful. Nowadays audiences are very comfortable watching horror movies. They expect to see some scares and then laugh with the jokes of some stupid teens avid of rave music and easy sex. Fulci in that aspect was an author beyond his time. He tried to shock people, scare them, revolve their stomachs, those were their methods to gain the pubic but he NEVER underestimated the audiences, he gave his 100% and made cult classics.

Bienvenue chez les Robinson 2007

Complots, maîtres chanteurs, corruption, liaisons incestueuses entre politiques et hommes d'affaires, journalistes sans peur et sans reproche, tous les ingrédients des thrillers carrés à l'américaine – À cause d'un assassinat, Les Trois Jours du Condor – figurent au menu de cette enquête menée dans la jungle feutrée des cols blancs internationaux. En retrouvant la veine d'I comme Icare, le réalisateur du Clan des Siciliens a parfois la patte un peu lourde. Mais il a su réunir une formidable équipe de comédiens : dans son avant-dernier rôle, Patrick Dewaere abandonne sa traditionnelle dégaine de paumé pour se transformer en justicier donquichottesque, à l'instar du héros du Juge Fayard, dit le shérif d'Yves Boisset. C'est à l'Américain Mel Ferrer – Scaramouche, Elena et les Hommes, Guerre et Paix – qu'il revient d'incarner le PDG tentaculaire. Enfin, dans de petits rôles, Jean-Pierre Kalfon, Charles Denner et Jeanne Moreau apportent une tonalité kafkaïenne trop rare dans le cinéma d'action made in France.

The Riddle (DVDrip - 2006)

A journalist investigates a series of murders that follows the discovery of an unpublished novel by Charles Dickens in the cellar of an old Thames-side-pub. Gradually he becomes obsessed with unraveling a century-old murder in the pages of the manuscript. Within these flights of fancy director Joachim Trier neatly encapsulates that take-on-the-world optimism of unsullied youth. Trier flicks through elaborate visions of 'what could be' as Phillip and Erik stuff their manuscripts into a post box. It's a vibrant introduction, a live-action scrapbook of future memories complete with wry voiceover. We're told that "cult status" beckons - because mainstream celebrity is for losers - and what's a writer without some tragedy to mine from? Just as Phillip receives news that his book will be published, Trier cuts to him brooding in a sanatorium where his "obsessive" love for rock chick Kari (Viktoria Winge) is driving him to distraction.
Phillip's push-and-pull romance with Kari bristles with intrigue, even if she's just a mirror to his self-obsession. Later on, however, his endless moping grows a tad irksome. Suddenly Erik, who's initially bland, becomes more engaging. He concludes that long-term relationships sap the creative drive, so he opts to ditch his girlfriend. Still, this immature cad manages to rouse empathy because he struggles to do the deed, and since he's yet to be published, the stakes for him feel higher. In both cases, whenever the burden of 'life experience' gets too heavy, Trier justifies the boys' hardships with a bright and breezy detour through would-be glories. Altogether he crafts a striking portrait of the artist as a young brat, with the leads showing enough sensitivity to carry it off. Their shared journey mightn't be profoundly moving, but it's a trip in more ways than one

Odette, hampered by an overwhelming sense of insecurity, proclaims herself unfit for the job and sets out to leave the forest when the evil wizard Rothbart (voiced by Kelsey Grammer) turns her into a swan. Bolstered by the powers of the magic crystal, Odette vows to defeat Rothbart. Meanwhile, love blossoms between Odette and the town's Prince Daniel and, eventually, Odette finds a courage within herself that, combined with her intelligence and the true love between her and the Prince, proves powerful enough to defeat Rothbart. The computer-generated animation in this 83-minute presentation is vivid and lifelike, the London Symphony gives a wonderful performance of Tchaikovsky's original music, and the choreography and dancing is nicely done thanks to Peter Martins and the New York City Ballet.
