The Silent City (2006)

The story revolves around 3 soldiers who are on the outskirts of a war torn city. They are patrolling an area when a bomb is accidentally set off and they have to wait for help. The short is, well, pretty short. Clocking in at just around 5 minutes, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot you can do in that amount of time but the imagery was certainly there. Well done cinematography and CG make for what could possibly be a full length ordeal if done by the same people.
It took a bit, but while watching it I couldn't help but think that one of the soldiers looked a lot like Cillian Murphy. When the credits rolled, sure enough up came his name.
Would definitely like to see more from this team.

Evil Dead II (1987)

It's generally accepted by moviegoers that sequels to hits are always going to be poor, over-commercialised imitations of the original. Well, for every supposed truism there has to be an exception and Evil Dead II is one sequel that is even better than the original. Not so much a follow-up as a ruthless self-parody, Evil Dead II ranks as one of the most visually inventive, relentless, and truly original films ever made. (BBC)

Pumpkin et Yolanda ont décidé de braquer une caféteria, ignorant qu'ils vont se retrouver face à Vincent et Jules, deux tueurs professionnels... Quelques jours plus tôt, Wallace a ordonné à Vincent d'accompagner sa femme Mia au restaurant, mais la soirée a mal tourné, Mia étant victime d'une overdose de cocaïne? Dans le même temps, Wallace a eu des problèmes avec Butch, un boxeur parti avec de l'argent lui appartenant. Du coup, un contrat a été confié à Vincent et Jules, chargés de retrouver Butch et sa précieuse mallette. Hélas, les ennuis se sont multipliés, en particulier quand Vincent a fait exploser le crâne d'un jeune voyou par maladress ! Ils ont maintenant résolu leurs problèmes, se remettant en buvant un café. Et c'est justement ce bar que Pumpkin et Yolanda attaquent !

Pumpkin and Honey Bunny are two thieves who, while dining at a coffee shop, decide that the best thing to do is to rob it. Vincent and Jules, two hit men working for mob kingpin Marcellus Wallace, are sent to retrieve a very special and very mysterious briefcase for their boss. Vincent later must also show Mrs. Wallace a good time while her husband is out. Butch Coolidge is an aging prizefighter who is being paid to "take a dive", but instead, accidentally kills him opponent, and tries to flee town, but not before getting his dead father's lucky golden watch. These four seemingly unrelated stories are interwoven together in a non-linear fashion.

Scenes from a Marriage (1973)

Scenes from a Marriage was originally conceived as a six-part TV mini-series. Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson play Marianne and Josef, an upper-middle-class married couple. At first glance, their lives appear to be devoid of marital conflict, but soon after the opening sequence, it becomes clear that tension is mounting just below the surface. The movie consists almost entirely of dramatic exchanges between Marianne and Josef and eventually evolves into an agonizing account of the deterioration of their marriage. But throughout it all, a deep, underlying love keeps the couple from breaking off all ties--in spite of the mutual aggression, cruelty, and even violence that forms part of their relationship.

Ingmar Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage, starring the incomparable Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson as lovers who don't always know it, is a movie of such extraordinary intimacy that it has the effect of breaking into mysterious components many things we ordinarily accept without thought, familiar and banal objects, faces, attitudes, and emotions, especially love. A smile is a composite of pain, anger, affection, and creeping boredom. The surface of a double bed is a linen battleground. Later the rumpled white sheets suggest an abandoned Arctic landscape on a planet in a universe that might be contained within the head of a pin.

In Scenes from a Marriage, Mr. Bergman is examining the molecular structure of a human relationship. You think you've seen it before, but every time you see it, it's new, which is one of the things about love. Like a laboratory model of a molecule, the design is complex and beautiful in a purely abstract way, but the film is also intensely, almost unbearably moving.
The look of the film has something to do with this. The two-hour, forty-eight-minute movie, which opened yesterday at the Cinema I, is Mr. Bergman's theatrical version of a five-hour production he made for Swedish television last year. The director has not only edited the six original fifty-minute installments down to the present length, but he has blown up the 16mm negative to 35mm, which gives a kind of pointillist effect.

Under Mr. Bergman's direction and with his material, Miss Ullmann again establishes herself as one of the most fascinating actresses of our time, and if she seems to have the edge over her costar, it may well be because of the director's fascination with women. He can't help paying tribute to them.
Mr. Josephson gives an equally complex performance, but Johan seems to have been conceived with a certain amount of guilt. He's a not-quite-admirable character. As Marianne liberates herself, Johan drifts into unspectacular failure. Yet this is to oversimplify Bergman, and nothing in this film is cut and dried.

Toward the end, Johan and Marianne are having an illicit weekend at a country cabin. It is twenty years since they met, and Marianne still wonders whether she can love anyone. Johan cradles her as they sit in bed. After twenty years Johan is sleepy but not yet exhausted. He says: "I think I love you in my imperfect and rather selfish way. And I think you love me in your stormy, emotional way. In fact, I think that you and I love one another. In an earthly and imperfect way."

Black Christmas (2007)

A remake of the 1974 horror movie Black Christmas. The movie tells the story about Billy, a young boy who was abused by his mother as a child. While his mother was cheating on Billy's father, she eventually killed his father and kept Billy in the attic - for good, while she was with her lover and starting a "new" family. The League of Gentlemen: The Complete Series 3 (2002) - BBC Comedy Series

This is the third series of the phenomenom that is the League of the Gentlemen television show. Different from series 1 & 2 in that there's no annoying laughter and more concentration on specific characters, it's definitely the best and most daring thing they've done so far.

The idea of following one character around in each episode is an ingenious one, and I'm sure nothing like this has ever been done before in comedy. It's good to see people like ever-suffering Charlie Hull and 48 yr old ex-restart officer come lesbian, Pauline (both played by Steve Pemberton) brought out of their restrictive 'sketch' environment and into the real world (so to speak) where we can learn more about them - we find out that Pauline has always wanted to own a pen shop called 'Her Nibs' with a girl who does Saturday mornings, and that Charlie is quite the handyman when it comes to giving massages...

Overall we get a much more action-packed and gritty series that brings frighteningly REAL touches to the show. I think prior to this series you were safe in the knowledge that the characters were locked away in Royston Vasey and they couldn't really 'harm' you or anything. But now many of those old, more theatrical characters, such as Local Shop inhabitants Tubbs and Edward and toad obsessed Harvey Denton, have been replaced by people who are made THAT much creepier and realistic by the way the Gents have played them and by the way Director Steve Bendelack has shot them (more subtleties, less studio and more location filming etc.). But of course, this is the League Of Gentlemen so nothing and no-one are ever what they seem... (source)

Baby Bink couldn't ask for more; he has adoring (if somewhat sickly-sweet) parents, he lives in a huge mansion, and he's just about to appear in the social pages of the paper. Unfortunately, not everyone in the world is as nice as Baby Bink's parents; especially the three enterprising kidnapers who pretend to be photographers from the newspaper. Successfully kidnaping Baby Bink, they have a harder time keeping hold of the rascal, who not only keeps one step ahead of them, but seems to be more than a little bit smarter than the three bumbling criminals.

Beowulf & Grendel (2006)

King Solomon's Mines (2004)

I thought King Solomon's Mines was beautifully done. My only reservation was Alison Doody. Her acting was superb but her makeup and hair was not of the period, and always seemed to make her look out of place next to the other actors. I thought Patrick Swayze was an excellent choice for Alan Quatermain. It was nice seeing a seasoned, rugged looking actor in this role after sitting through movie after movie with the fair haired, fair skinned actors like Val Kilmer, Brad Pitt, etc. He was an excellent choice and I enjoyed every minute of this movie. This version cannot be compared with the 1950's version with Stewart Grainger. It was a big screen movie and not a made for TV movie. I thought both Quatermains were believable but the two medias have to be kept separated. I am looking forward to seeing this once more, and I hope Patrick Swayze will again look to these type of roles.

Balto (1995)

Balto is a 1995 animated film produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblimation animation studio, distributed by Universal Pictures, and originally released to movie theatres in 1995. Balto is very loosely based on a true story about the dog, Balto, who helped save children from the diphtheria epidemic in the 1925 serum run to Nome. The film's poor performance at the box office led to the closure of Amblimation, but it became a cult classic and it was fairly successful when it was released on video, spawning two sequels: Balto II: Wolf Quest and Balto III: Wings of Change.

The story opens with a live-action segment in Central Park, New York City. A grandmother (Miriam Margolyes), her granddaughter (Lola Bates-Campbell), and Blaze, their pet husky, search for the Balto memorial statue. The granddaughter hands her grandmother a musher's hat, and the grandmother begins telling the story of Balto.

The movie fades to a dogsled race Nome, Alaska, where two sled teams are racing to the finishing line in the town itself. In this race a dog named Steele, the leader of one of the teams, openly uses forces to gain the upper hand on his rivals. In the town, waiting for the racing teams to arrive are Balto, an outcast half-wolf half-husky, and his best friend and Russian-accented goose Boris.

As they await the oncoming team, Balto sees a young girl named Rosy and Rosy's female husky named Jenna waiting among the audience. When Rosy's hat falls on to the path of Steele's oncoming sled team, Balto enters the racing line to retrieve the hat, incuring Steele's wrath when Balto manages to outrun him. Rosy is thankful for Balto's kindness but Rosy's father is quick to dismiss him because of his part-wolf bloodline. Steele's ire with Balto is worsened when he is scorned by Jenna, whom he suspects likes Balto romantically.

Later, Rosy is growing ill. When Jenna watches the doctor examine Rosy through a window, Balto arrives and helps her enter the space beneath the floorboards of the doctor's office, where they learn that Rosy is afflicted with diphtheria, and the doctor is out of antitoxin.

In the telegraph office, the operator contacts Anchorage requesting the diphtheria antitoxin. All routes to Nome are blocked, the planes cannot get there in the bad weather, and the nearest train line runs only to Nenana. A decision is made to have a sled team pick up the medicine from the Nenana train station and take it to Nome.

A race is held to determine who will be on the team to fetch the anti-toxin. Balto, who wants to help Rosy, enters the race and manages to win, but he is not allowed to enter the team due to Steele's manipulations. The team, lead by Steele, travel to Nenanna where they pick up the medicine. However, on the way back Steele loses his the path in a blizzard and slides down a hill. The musher is knocked unconscious and the team have no way of making it home.

When the news reaches Nome, Balto decides to go out to find the sled team with Boris, Muk, and Luk. On the way, they are attacked by a large grizzly bear which tries to crush Balto, and is about to kill him when, much to his surprise, Jenna comes to the rescue. The bear eventually falls in a frozen lake and Jenna is mildly injured. Balto tells his friends to take Jenna back to Nome while he heads on alone.

Balto manages to find the sled team, but Steele does not want his help. After a brief struggle, Steele plummets down a cliff, but is still alive. Balto resets the sled and leads the team, but soon finds himself lost when the markings he'd placed on trees to show the way have been corrupted by Steele. Balto is briefly separated from the team, where he encounters a white wolf. Finding renewed strength in embracing his wolf heritage, Balto returns to the team and successfully leads them back to Nome.

Jenna, Boris, Muk and Luk are overjoyed to be reunited with Balto, who received a hero's welcome. Although he was previously shunned, Balto is now embraced by the people of Nome, and is led to Rosy's in the clinic where she tells him, "I would have been lost without you."

The movie fades back into the live-action sequence in Central Park. At the end, the grandmother says, "Thank you, Balto. I would have been lost without you." Thus revealing that she is Rosy.

Remy is a young rat in the French countryside who arrives in Paris, only to find out that his cooking idol is dead. When he travels to Kenya, he finds that an excavation team has unearthed an ancient church which is several centuries old. The condition of this church is very good, despite of it's age. Merrin goes underground to view this church and is fascinated by it. Then a series of deaths amidst reports of workers going insane surface. Merrin will now find out that this excavation houses an ancient evil - so ancient that it was built even before people starting worshiping Jesus in Africa. This is the prequel to the legendary movie Exorcist, evil originates from here, which gives birth to a horror that will follow Merrin for many years to come.

Plot summary for Lonely Hearts (2006):
In the late 1940's, Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez were America's notorious "Lonely Hearts Killers". Their lethal scam was simple; they would swindle and then viciously murder lovelorn war widows who would answer their personal ads in which Ray would describe himself as a sexy Latin Lover. Ironically, Ray's initial introduction to Martha was as a prospective mark. But when they met, it was love at first sight, perhaps as a result of their penchant for kinky sex and their mutual love for duplicity and easy money. With Martha posing as Ray's sister, they bilked elderly spinsters and widows of their savings and then viciously murdered them in a bloodbath of sexual frenzy. When they were arrested, Martha and Ray confessed to 12 killings, although it is believed the actual number is closer to 20. At their sensational trial, Martha and Ray cooed, held hands and seemed as though they could not get enough of each other. Their plea of not guilty by reason of insanity was rejected, and on August 22, 1949, the homicidal lovers were sentenced to death. After numerous appeals, they were electrocuted on March 8, 1951, side-by-side in Sing Sing prison.

This way, he can appreciate the artistic beauty of the frozen world and the people inside it - especially Sharon, the quiet checkout girl, who perhaps holds the answer to solving the problem of Ben's insomnia.
